Yesterday, Mike and I went to Sandy Hook to take pictures and watch the sunset. We got along rather well. We got to the lighthouse and realized that this particular piece of New Jersey history is actually not all that interesting. The lighthouse is undergoing some "cosmetic improvements" which means there's nobody around and no shortage of "CAUTION" tape. I was more concerned with the incredibly friendly and cool looking stray cats across the street than I was in the lighthouse itself.
Walking on the beach, while relaxing and inspiring, was incredibly painful. Beach sand is soft and shifts rather unpredictably under one's feet, leading to stress, stretching and twisting that was definitely never meant for a fucked up ankle. I got through it though, hiding my pain rather well, I think. The sunset was amazing. It's rare that I speak of something in New Jersey as "amazing", but it was. The sky was brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow and aqua behind deep purple clouds. The way the clouds had formed in the sky made me envision someone mixing oil and water with a toothpick, marbelizing the sky. I'm not sure how else to describe it on this little sleep. It was a truly unique sunset. Luckily, I got about fifty pictures of it, so I'm sure a few will show up in my Webshots account quite soon.
As the sun set, the light from the rising moon danced on the water from behind a curtain of fog and light clouds. I watched the first stars appear. It reminded me of one certain night, that I do not yet have the courage to discuss here. It made me long for romance that just didn't come. Undoubtedly, Mike and I felt closer as a result of this night, but for now, our relationship still lacks that certain romantic spark.
Our night ended with fireworks. Obviously, I'm not talking the romantic kind, where you kiss and see fireworks. Some town a bit south of Sandy Hook (I think it may have been Belmar) set off a pretty long fireworks display, which we could see in the distance. I have no idea what for, but it was a nice little treat.
Yes, in all it was a good night. Cool cats, gorgeous sunset and getting along with Mike.
~Now how do I make more nights like this happen?~
